Social Gaming: India/Australia Performance

Last year I collaborated with Amitesh Grover (Artist, New Delhi) and Rosie Hinde (Artistic Director, Kenneth Myer Asian Theatre Series) to create a series of simultaneous performances between Melbourne and New Delhi called Social Gaming.

Social Gaming is an Internet Performance Event in Real Time between multiple cities. People separated by thousands of kilometers connect in real time through the digital medium, participate in an instruction-based gaming and interactive event which helps them understand each other better – culture, language, city and surroundings – with loads of fun, creatively and excitement thrown in.Amitesh Grover

My first year Performance Practice class from the BFA Theatre Practice worked with guest artist Sapidah Kian, colleagues from Arts Centre Melbourne and myself to figure out the rules of the games and create new three minute one-to-one performances for Skype.  We conducted classes over Skype too.  The students presented prototype versions of their Skype performances for Amitesh in India, who then led the discussion about the work with me and the group.  Over the nights of the performances, the students performed to Indian audiences from locations all over Melbourne.

Amitesh created this video which shows the participants and artists working together in real time.
